Europe’s golden season is not July and August, contrary to popular belief. Those two months are the most expensive and the most crowded, and the heat in the south of the continent goes well past comfortable.

Late April to mid-June is the best balance: mild weather, long daylight, and prices clearly below the summer peak. Attractions keep full opening hours and the queues are shorter.

September and early October are an excellent option too, especially for those travelling without school-age children. Prices drop as soon as the European holiday season ends.

Winter has a character of its own: Christmas markets in Germany and Austria, and the lowest flight and hotel prices of the year. The only drawback is the short daylight and the cold.

A practical rule: book flights 8 to 12 weeks ahead, and hotels 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Booking extremely early does not always mean a better price.
